Arshad Khalid, who is accused of being involved in drug trafficking in the Maldives, has been brought back to the Maldives.

Arshad Khalid, 26, Allora, GDh. Hoadedhdhoo was accused of being in charge of smuggling 9 kg of drugs seized in late January 2020 and 119 kg of drugs seized in a special operation conducted by Police in December last year.

He was deported from Dubai and was brought to the Maldives via Sri Lanka early yesterday. However, Police have not yet made an official statement on the matter.

Arshad is also accused of being involved in smuggling 119 kg of drugs seized in late 2021 in Male’ and Hulhumale’. As per Police, Arshad fled to Sri Lanka in December after smuggling drugs into Male’. Arshad has since lived abroad.

In addition, under a special Police investigation from 31 January 2020 to 7 February 2020, Police searched ten houses and vehicles and seized nine kilograms of heroin and four grams of cocaine, along with MVR 4.6 million in drug money. Eight people were charged related to the case. However, only two were convicted, and the other six, including Arshad, were acquitted. Police allege that this was a business led by Arshad. Hence the ruling has been appealed to the High Court.
