Economic Development and Trade Minister Mohamed Saeed has announced that the government will take immediate action if commodity prices rise during Ramadan.
Minister Saeed made the remarks during the 'Ahaa Forum' tonight, responding to the public's concerns. He emphasized that the government will not allow the price hikes witnessed last year to recur. Saeed credited the government’s successful management of prices during Ramadan last year to a special committee set up by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. This year, he assured that the same measures will be implemented to prevent price increases.
According to Saeed, the government has already taken steps to keep prices stable, intending to maintain an increase of less than 3%. He noted that President Muizzu has directed the Cabinet to formulate a special policy to manage prices during the holy month.
A list of 183 items has been compiled for Ramadan, of which 54 are categorized as critical goods. Saeed warned that the government will take swift action against any price increases during the period.
“We are targeting to address any price hike immediately,” Minister Saeed stated.
In his remarks, Saeed urged businesses to cooperate with the government’s efforts and work to ensure that prices do not rise during Ramadan.
President Muizzu has already expressed his commitment to taking the necessary measures to prevent price inflation, highlighting that one of the government’s main economic objectives is to increase prosperity while controlling the cost of living. He added that last year’s efforts helped keep market prices steady, and the same approach will be applied this year.
