Hamas’ Gaza chief Khalil Al-Hayya on Sunday confirmed that senior commander Raed Saed was killed in an Israeli strike a day earlier, marking the most high-profile assassination of a Hamas leader since a ceasefire in Gaza took effect in October.

In a televised address on Hamas’ Al-Aqsa TV, Al-Hayya said the group maintains a “legitimate right” to possess weapons, stressing that any proposals for the next phases of the ceasefire must respect that position.

“Resistance and its weapons are a legitimate right guaranteed by international law and are linked to the establishment of a Palestinian state,” he said, adding that Hamas is open to considering proposals that preserve this right while ensuring the creation of a Palestinian state.
