Malé City Mayor Adam Azim has called on voters to reject the government in the upcoming local council elections, saying the ruling party has failed to deliver tangible benefits to the people despite holding a majority in the Malé City Council.
Speaking to Raajje TV, Azim said the public had given the government the presidency, a parliamentary majority and control of the city council based on promises of housing and development, but little had been achieved. He noted that although the ruling party dominates the council, services and projects for residents have stalled.
Azim criticised the way the council operates, pointing out that meetings often cannot be held due to the lack of quorum. He said council seats should not be held by those who do not actively serve the public, adding that councils are meant to work for people, not merely provide salaries.
He said the government would only act in the interests of the people if it faced defeat at the ballot box, urging voters to use their power wisely in shaping the country’s future.
Referring to the previous MDP administration, Azim said the government led by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih continued to provide medical treatment and essential services even during difficult periods, while completing thousands of housing units and major land reclamation projects.
Azim’s comments come as the ruling PNC and opposition parties have officially launched their campaigns for the April 4 local council elections, with the PNC accusing opposition-led councils of obstructing government projects.
