At the Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held today in Jeddah, Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel of the Maldives delivered a forceful denunciation of recent calls to displace the Palestinian people from their homeland.
Speaking on the ongoing Israeli aggression against Palestine, Dr. Khaleel expressed grave concern over violations of the ceasefire agreement and the continuous attacks on Palestinian civilians.
In his remarks, Dr. Khaleel condemned the displacement rhetoric and urged the international community to ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian assistance to those affected by the conflict. He called for the immediate establishment of a permanent ceasefire, emphasizing that the ongoing aggression only deepens the humanitarian crisis in the region. Furthermore, he reiterated the Maldives’ firm support for the Gaza reconstruction plan adopted at the recent Arab League Summit.
Highlighting the Maldives’ unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause, Dr. Khaleel noted that his country has taken concrete steps, including filing a declaration of intervention concerning Israel’s obligations under international law related to the activities of UN agencies in the occupied Palestinian territory. He stressed that a just and lasting peace can only be achieved through the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The OIC, representing 57 member states, has long been a staunch advocate for the rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people. The Maldives, an active OIC member since 1976, continues to play a significant role in promoting peace and stability in the region, reaffirming its support for a comprehensive resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
