The UN General Assembly is expected to vote Thursday on a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages held by Hamas, and the full reopening of Israeli border crossings to allow vital humanitarian aid into the besieged territory.

The resolution, drafted by Spain and obtained by The Associated Press, condemns the use of starvation as a method of warfare and urges compliance with international humanitarian law. It also invokes a March order from the International Court of Justice for Israel to expand aid access into Gaza.

While not legally binding, the resolution is anticipated to pass by a wide margin in the 193-member assembly, reflecting global concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis. Experts warn that some 2 million Palestinians face the threat of famine if aid restrictions and the ongoing Israeli military campaign continue.

This follows last week’s failed Security Council vote on a similar resolution, blocked by a U.S. veto over the omission of a demand for hostage releases. The new draft reiterates support for mediation efforts by Egypt, Qatar, and the U.S., and restates backing for a two-state solution, including Gaza as part of a future Palestinian state.

The war, now in its ninth month, began after Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, over 55,000 Palestinians have since been killed in Israel’s military response.
