Maldives extends the ongoing public health emergency period for another month.

The order signed by the Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem announced that the current state of public health emergency declared in the Maldives in response to the coronavirus pandemic to be extended until July.

The Maldives announced a state of public health emergency on March 12 last year. The first such declaration under a recent public health protection law.

The recent extension of the state of public health emergency was ordered in considering the threat of a severe nationwide outbreak remaining widespread. With this, the Minister also ordered the Director-General of Public Health to take special measures required to mitigate the threat of Covid-19 in the Maldives.

With a surge in Covid-19 infections in recent weeks, over 70 residential islands outside of the greater Male' region are placed under monitoring. So far, Maldives has recorded over 66,500 positive cases and 43,900 recoveries. The Maldives had reported 173 deaths recorded from Covid-19 complications.
