Parliament minority leader MP Ahmed Saleem said that the opposition will not be approving the government's proposed budget for the year 2021.

Speaking at the budget debate at the recent parliament sitting, MP Ahmed Saleem requested the government to take back the current proposed budget of 34.7 billion Rufiyaa, adding that the government should revise the budget, considering the economic challenges faced from the Covid-19 pandemic. MP Saleem suggests that the government should propose a budget with fewer expenses.

MP Saleem also highlighted the statement by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) at the Budget Committee of the parliament, where MMA officials said that the economic challenges faced from the Covid-19 pandemic, has impacted the finances of the people of the Maldives. Following which, MP Saleem stated that the budget should be supporting the people to recover from the financial challenges impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The government proposed budget for 2021 consists of MVR 34.8 billion of which total expenditure is MVR 33.3 billion. The budget consists of 62.3% as recurrent expenditure and 37.7% as capital expenditure. It is estimated that the government would receive MVR 17.8 billion as revenue and grants in 2020, of which the majority is from tax revenue. The proposed budget deficit for 2021 is 15.5 billion, and this is 23.4% of GDP.
