President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced through his presidential manifesto to introduce tourism leadership scholarships to 500 locals within five years of his rule if he wins the next presidential election.
As part of his presidential agenda, the President has pledged to increase local participation in the tourism industry by offering 500 tourism leadership scholarships over five years. This initiative aims to reserve 50 percent of top resort positions for locals through education and training programs.
According to President Solih's Manifesto, the President will also provide technical and financial assistance to create world-class local hospitality management brands that the Maldives will be proud of by introducing an investment fund to increase local ownership share in the tourism industry and provide capital to Dhvehi businesses. The fund will also invest in the development of liveaboard and guesthouse businesses.
The manifesto also includes facilitating government-mediated investments to increase bed capacity in international airports for sustainable flight operations, marketing the north and south of the country as separate destinations with new tourism products, and prioritizing the attraction of tourists from new markets.
It will link tourism operators in the local islands with resorts and provide more opportunities for small businesses to develop the island-level economy. The presidential manifesto also states that the government will provide the necessary skills and education to take the local workers to the forefront of the tourism industry and build competent local employees for such positions.
The manifesto states that new tourism products will showcase Maldives' rich heritage, culture, and traditions.
The manifesto proposes the development of an entertainment complex on Convention Island to host conferences, cruise terminals in the north, south, and Male' regions, and expansion of maize tourism. It also suggests special housing schemes for tourism workers and easy access to social and economic opportunities.
