Election Commission Chairman Ahmed Shareef has announced that the Local Council Election (LCE), which was postponed from April 2020, is now scheduled for March 6, 2021.

Speaking about the Local Council Election at a Raajje Tv program, Shareef further said that the Local Council Election was postponed, due to the amendment brought to the constitution following the Covid-19 pandemic. As per the new constitution amendment, the scheduled dates for Local Council Election have to be announced after one week of dismissal of the Public health emergency.

Shareef added that although the Public health emergency is not dismissed, the Local Council Election is planned to hold on March 6, 2021. Shareef also said that the currently scheduled date is not an official announcement.

Speaking further, Shareef said that the purpose of planning to schedule the election early next year is to announce the election results before Ramadan, to give enough time to campaign as per the constitution, and since the election postponement rules require to hold the elections within a year from postponing it. Shareef said that as per the election postponement rules in the constitution, the postponed elections have to be held before May 2021.

As per the Election Commission, along with preparation for the local council elections (LCE), the commission is also preparing for the women's development committee elections (WDCE).
