Over the weekend, heavy rainfall in the Maldives led to widespread flooding in various parts of the country, prompting urgent response efforts by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
Following days of scorching heat, the Maldives experienced heavy rains starting Friday night, resulting in extensive flooding in the capital city and beyond. Yesterday's rainfall exacerbated the situation, with the NDMA reporting flooding in 132 locations across the city. Immediate action was taken in 122 areas, with authorities deploying 732 sandbags across 104 locations to mitigate the impact of flooding.
In response to the crisis, the NDMA collaborated with the Maldivian Red Crescent to conduct rapid assessments of affected households. Ten households were assessed, and temporary shelter and food assistance were provided to 42 individuals from six households for one night.
The adverse weather conditions also affected islands beyond the capital, including Sh. Feevah, Sh. Foakaidhoo, and Th. Vandhoo islands, where residential properties suffered damage. The NDMA reported significant damage, including 20 houses in Sh. Feevah island, 03 houses in Sh. Foakaidhoo island, and 01 house in Th. Vandhoo island.
Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, the NDMA highlighted the need to address severe flooding in certain areas promptly. In response, 34 individuals residing in five houses deemed uninhabitable due to flooding are being relocated to temporary housing. These areas have been inundated to the point where continued residence is no longer feasible, according to the NDMA's assessment.
