Maafaru Airport has officially reopened for international flights following a significant runway expansion project. The airport was temporarily closed in May this year to facilitate the construction, which was awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

The expansion involved extending the runway by 650 meters, bringing its total length to 2,800 meters. This upgrade enables the airport to accommodate larger aircraft, including Boeing 777s, which are commonly used for international flights, according to Island Aviation.

Maafaru International Airport, alongside Velana International Airport, holds the distinction of having the second-largest number of private jets in the Maldives. Last year, the airport recorded a notable increase in private jet landings, with 353 jets arriving, marking a rise of 125 jets compared to the previous year.

With the runway expansion complete, Maafaru Airport is set to enhance its capacity and services, making it a key hub for both international travel and private aviation in the region.
