President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is set to embark on an official visit to Estonia from January 13-16, 2025, at the invitation of Estonian President Dr Alar Karis.
This marks the first-ever official visit to Estonia by a sitting Maldivian President and aims to strengthen bilateral ties, particularly in digital governance, climate action, science, and education.
During the visit, President Dr Muizzu will meet with President Dr Karis, Speaker of the Estonian Parliament Lauri Hussar, and several key ministers, including Minister of Education and Research Kristina Kallas, Minister of Climate Yoko Alender, Minister of Health Riina Sikut, and Minister of Justice and Digital Affairs Liisa-Ly Pakosta. Discussions will focus on advancing cooperation in digital transformation, cybersecurity, and e-governance, as well as exploring collaboration on climate and environmental initiatives.
As part of his visit, President Dr Muizzu will also travel to Tartu, Estonia’s second-largest city, where he will be welcomed by Mayor Urmas Klaas. Tartu is home to the University of Tartu, one of the world’s top research institutions. The President will visit the university’s research and development facilities, the Estonian Genome Database Centre, and the Greenergy Data Centre, gaining insights into Estonia’s innovations in science and technology.
A key highlight of the visit will be a roundtable discussion organized by the Digital Advisory Council to the President of Estonia. Estonia is globally recognized as a leader in digital governance, pioneering e-governance platforms, the e-Residency program, and advanced digital solutions in public services.
President Muizzu has identified digital transformation as a key priority, aiming to establish a digital economy that contributes up to 15% of the Maldives' GDP by 2030. The government is currently developing a Digital Transformation Roadmap and Strategy, working on an AI Readiness assessment in collaboration with UNESCO, and formulating a National AI Masterplan.
Accompanying the President on this visit will be Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan, and a senior government delegation. Additionally, a private delegation of leaders from the Maldivian tech sector will join the visit to explore potential collaborations with Estonian technology firms and institutions.
The visit is expected to pave the way for greater cooperation between the Maldives and Estonia in key areas, reinforcing the Maldivian government’s commitment to digital innovation and sustainable development.
