Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol attempted to provoke North Korea into a military confrontation to justify the declaration of martial law in December 2024 and to eliminate political opponents, a special prosecutor said on Monday.
Special prosecutor Cho Eun-seok said his team has indicted 24 individuals, including Yoon and five former cabinet members, following a six-month investigation into alleged insurrection-related charges.
Cho said the indictments stem from actions taken in the lead-up to the martial law declaration, which prosecutors allege was part of a broader effort to consolidate power and suppress opposition.
