Former MP and prominent lawyer Ali Hussain has claimed that all state power is now concentrated in the hands of the President, arguing that the Maldives has effectively become a presidential monarchy.

Speaking on Rajje Tv, Ali said the country needs major systemic reform and called for the decentralization of presidential powers. He stressed that the President should not wield unchecked authority.

Ali said the Maldives belongs to its people, not to the President alone, noting that the President is elected by the public for a five-year term. He also emphasized the need for mechanisms to investigate the President in cases of abuse of power or illegal actions.

Criticizing the legislature, Ali alleged that members of parliament have become tools of the executive, claiming MPs act as “rubber stamps” following presidential directives.
