Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that development has failed to materialize despite the government holding executive power and a full majority in Parliament, questioning its ability to deliver progress even if it wins control of local councils.
Speaking at a town hall meeting organized by his People’s National Front (PNF) on Sunday, Yameen criticized calls for all local council seats to be handed to the ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC) in the upcoming local council elections. He said such appeals, reportedly made by President Mohamed Muizzu, amount to a warning to the public ahead of the polls.
Yameen argued that the government has delivered “not a single drop of development” over the past two years, despite its control of state power and Parliament. He said this record shows the administration is incapable of bringing the development people expect, even if it secures council seats.
He further accused the current government of lacking the capacity to meet public expectations and described President Muizzu as displaying authoritarian tendencies, warning voters to be cautious in the upcoming elections.
