Former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Mohamed Nasheed has praised the party’s recent local council elections and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) primary, describing them as a strong example of democratic political practice.

Nasheed said the smooth and peaceful conduct of the large-scale internal elections reflected the MDP’s organizational strength and democratic maturity. Expressing satisfaction with the process and outcome, he emphasized that well-planned, disciplined, and peaceful political activity is the foundation of any strong political party.

He also highlighted the unity, cooperation, and friendly atmosphere seen throughout the elections, calling it a significant step forward in strengthening democratic principles within the party.

Reflecting on the Maldives’ electoral history, Nasheed said the MDP’s election reminded him of the country’s first election to determine its system of governance. He said that since that time, the MDP has consistently demonstrated its ability to conduct elections smoothly, adding that the same standard was evident in the party’s latest polls.
