Gan International Airport in Addu City will be developed as the main southern hub for international airlines, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen said.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Southern Connectivity project in Fuvahmulah, Minister Ameen said Gan Airport has long had the capacity to handle all types of commercial aircraft, but progress had been hindered by insufficient efforts to attract airlines and develop tourism-related arrangements.

He said the initiative aligns with the policy direction of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and aims to strengthen the transport network and revive the regional economy. The new service, set to begin on February 1, 2026, is expected to provide major relief to tourism and public transport in Addu City and surrounding regions.

Minister Ameen added that the government is working to bring a Middle Eastern and a Chinese airline to Gan Airport, noting that offering significant concessions would be key to attracting international carriers. He assured that the government would transform Gan International Airport into the southern aviation hub of the Maldives.
