Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has announced plans to introduce RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology to improve vehicle security and aid law enforcement.
Speaking to state media, the minister said the new system aims to prevent the use of counterfeit license plates, detect unauthorized use of vehicles, and identify speeding. He noted that the current lack of proper vehicle security is a major concern for owners, as even theft by others is becoming common.
Ameen said the RFID system will reduce vehicle theft and ease the burden on police, who currently face challenges monitoring the large number of vehicles.
The move comes as over 118,000 vehicles are registered in the capital, with 70 percent being two-wheelers. The ministry believes the RFID system will offer a practical and efficient solution to ensure safety and accountability on the roads.
