Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen has announced plans to introduce a new insurance package aimed at providing compensation for road vehicle damage, supplementing existing third-party insurance coverage.

Speaking to local media, the minister explained that while current laws require third-party insurance, it does not cover direct losses such as theft. The new package will bridge this gap, offering broader protection to vehicle owners.

Minister Ameen said a draft amendment to the Transport Act is currently being prepared and will be submitted to Parliament soon. The proposed changes aim to resolve longstanding issues in the transport sector.

As part of the government’s Malé Fahi Programme, the Ministry of Transport is also working to ensure that third-party insurance offers more meaningful and comprehensive coverage rather than being symbolic. The new insurance package is expected to be introduced in the coming months.
