President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has proposed transforming R. Vaadhoo into the Maldives' first inhabited island fully powered by renewable energy, particularly solar power.
Speaking during his visit to R. Vaadhoo as part of his three-day tour of Raa Atoll, President Muizzu praised the island's residents for their proactive and development-focused mindset. He highlighted their initiatives in renewable energy, noting that the community has already taken significant steps toward sustainability.
The President reaffirmed the government's target of sourcing one-third of the nation's electricity supply from renewable energy by 2028. He expressed his desire to make R. Vaadhoo a model island in this regard, emphasizing that this goal is achievable with the residents' support. While clarifying that this is not a formal pledge, the President suggested making R. Vaadhoo a fully renewable energy-powered island within the next four years if the community embraces the vision.
Beyond renewable energy, President Muizzu addressed other pressing concerns, including waste management and land allocation issues, assuring residents of permanent solutions. He also committed to tackling coastal erosion by complementing the ongoing rock boulder project with the construction of a harbour that meets residents’ expectations.
President Muizzu reiterated his administration’s commitment to fulfilling campaign promises and ensuring the success of development projects requested by local councils and communities.
The President's visit to Raa Atoll includes stops at eleven islands, including An’golhitheemu, Hulhudhuffaaru, Innamaadhoo, Kinolhas, Maakurathu, Maduvvari, Fainu, Rasgetheemu, Rasmaadhoo, and Un’goofaaru. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation from ministries directly involved in public development and progress.
