President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the decision to include Ufulandhoo under the jurisdiction of R. Maduvvari and R. Thaavathaa under the jurisdiction of R. Meedhoo.
The announcement was made during his meeting with Maduvvari residents as part of his ongoing visit to several islands in Raa Atoll.
Addressing the space constraints in Maduvvari, the President highlighted the challenges posed by the island's fully occupied land and limited lagoon area, which restricts land reclamation possibilities. Despite these limitations, the Maduvvari land reclamation project has been included in this year’s budget. He assured residents that practical work would commence this year after consultations with relevant ministries and the local council.
The reclamation project aims to address several issues, including the incomplete backfilling of the harbour, insufficient erosion protection, and the lack of vehicle access to the harbour's outer breakwater. The project is scheduled for completion during President Muizzu's term.
However, the President acknowledged that adding six hectares of reclaimed land would not fully resolve the island’s space challenges. He proposed relocating industrial activities outside residential areas as a more practical and health-conscious solution.
To this end, he announced the decision to bring Ufulandhoo and Thaavathaa islands under the jurisdiction of Maduvvari and Meedhoo, respectively. Once the legal formalities are completed, these islands will serve as sites for facilities that do not need to be located in residential areas.
On housing development, the President shared plans to issue a tender this month to find a contractor for the island’s housing project, which will include new housing units for residents.
These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to addressing the development needs and challenges of Maduvvari and surrounding communities.
