The Maldives government has approved a comprehensive digital transformation framework under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's guidance. The framework aims to modernize the nation’s Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector and drive the country's digital economy.

The decision followed extensive discussions at Sunday's cabinet meeting, based on a proposal presented by the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology.

The new framework focuses on strengthening technology governance, enhancing public service delivery, and fostering innovation to improve productivity and expand digital services across government institutions and state-owned companies. It represents a significant step toward positioning the Maldives as a regional leader in digital development.

Key initiatives include establishing a National Sovereign Cloud to securely manage government data and expanding data centre capabilities to enhance the digital archive system. The government will introduce modern legislation and a regulatory framework to expedite digital transformation projects and ensure a conducive environment for economic growth.

An Interoperable Open Data Sharing Platform will be developed to enable seamless data exchange between government agencies, creating a centralized "Single Source of Truth" for accurate information management. Additionally, the framework emphasizes strengthening the e-Government system by digitalizing services and establishing citizen-centric national service platforms.

The introduction of e-Faas, a secure electronic identification system compliant with international standards, and digital signatures aims to streamline service access. To build a digitally competent workforce, the government will integrate advanced technology modules into school curricula, provide training in emerging technologies, and establish a dedicated research and development innovation fund.

As part of its efforts to prioritize local talent, the administration will implement a "Local First" policy for ICT service procurement and establish an Innovation Hub to foster technological research and development.

During the Cabinet meeting, ministers reviewed detailed implementation strategies and set timelines to achieve these objectives. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu emphasized the importance of leveraging technology for national development and delivering efficient, secure, and accessible services to all Maldivians.

The initiative aligns with the government's long-term vision to revolutionize the Maldives’ technological landscape and create an inclusive and innovation-driven digital economy.
