The number of cancer patients in the Maldives has surpassed 1,600, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA).
The statistics show a rising trend in cancer cases, with an increasing number of younger individuals diagnosed with the disease.
HPA’s Public Health Coordinator, Ahmed Muaz, revealed that cancer cases have been steadily increasing year after year. He further stated that the agency has been collecting cancer patient data for the past two years, which has helped in better understanding the scope of the issue.
Muaz explained that data from both Hulhumale and Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Malé region is currently being analyzed. "It is noteworthy that we have more than 1,600 cancer patients registered since we established our registry," Muaz added.
Among the patients, women are most commonly seeking treatment for breast cancer, while lung cancer is the most prevalent among men. The data collected so far highlights the growing need for cancer care and early detection initiatives in the country.
