Stray cats are now being relocated to the Olhuhiya pet care facility in the second phase of Hulhumalé’s animal welfare program.
The Olhuhiya facility, which was inaugurated last November, was initially intended to house stray animals. While efforts were made to move animals there last December, the process was delayed due to the Ministry of Animal Welfare’s decision to take over the facility’s management. The transfer was officially completed yesterday after extended discussions.
According to the Ministry, within 16 hours of taking control of Olhuhiya, their team established the necessary quarantine facilities for the incoming animals. As of now, 15 cats have been moved to the center, with more to follow.
The facility includes a dedicated quarantine area, a veterinary clinic and laboratory, a pharmacy stocked with pet medicines, and specially designed spaces for the animals. The city council, which initially managed the facility, handed over its operations to the Ministry, ensuring that the necessary resources are in place to provide proper care for the stray cats.
