Two high-powered water discharge pumps, capable of draining over 11,000 liters per minute, have been deployed to address severe flooding in the city, Mayor Adam Azim announced.
Speaking to 'Ras Online' today, Azim stated that the pumps were imported from the United States at a cost of MVR 3 million. He noted that the existing pumps could only discharge around 1,300 liters per minute and were prone to stoppages if obstructed by debris. However, the new pumps are designed to function without disruption, even when encountering leaves or other small obstructions.
The pumps were delivered yesterday and put into operation immediately. As the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) currently handles water drainage in the city, the council has officially requested the Ministry of Defence to transfer the new pumps for municipal use.
The move comes in response to heavy rains yesterday, which caused severe flooding across the city.
