Former US President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, his office announced Sunday.

Biden, 82, received the diagnosis on Friday following urinary symptoms, according to a statement. While the cancer is advanced, it is reportedly hormone-sensitive, which doctors say allows for effective treatment.

“This represents a more aggressive form of the disease, but manageable with current therapies,” the statement said.

Biden, who served as president from 2021 to 2025, ended his reelection campaign last July following a widely criticized debate performance. Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee but was defeated by Donald Trump in the November 2024 election.

Biden's age and health had been persistent concerns throughout his presidency and campaign. His successor, Trump, 78, now holds the distinction as the oldest person ever elected president.
