A total of 85,110 people across the Maldives have received the Covid-19 vaccine from the nationwide inoculation drive.

According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), 61,777 people have received the Covid-19 vaccine from the greater Male’ region. Out of this, 2,700 people were vaccinated in the last 24 hours.

HPA has also stated that so far 23,333 people have received the Covid-19 vaccine from outside the greater Male’ region. Out of this, 2,262 people were vaccinated in the last 24 hours.

As per the recent statistics, 4,962 people across the Maldives have received the Covid-19 vaccine in the last 24 hours.

The vaccine rollout program kicked off on February 01, with the Covishield vaccine donated by the Indian government. The Covishield vaccine is developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca and is being manufactured by the Serum Institute of India. So far, India has donated 200,000 doses of the Covishield vaccine.

Maldives has also received 5,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine as a donation. The Sinopharm vaccine is developed by a Chinese company to combat Covid-19. In addition to this, China has pledged to donate 100,000 doses of the same vaccine to the Maldives.

In addition to this, the U.N. children’s fund UNICEF has said that the 100,000 syringes and 1,000 safety boxes for vaccine storage were sent to the Maldives today in preparation for the first deliveries of Pfizer and AstraZeneca shots under the COVAX vaccine-sharing plan.

The COVAX facility - co-led by the World Health Organization, the GAVI vaccine alliance, and others - earlier this month allocated around 330 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines for poorer countries. It aims to deliver these and millions more in the first half of 2021.

Maldives is also expected to receive Covid-19 vaccines from the COVAX facility.
