Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam has emphasized the importance of ensuring the sustainability of the Maldives’ marine environment, stating that it is not a choice but a national necessity.
In his statement marking World Oceans Day, the Minister said the ocean is not only part of the Maldives’ green economy, but also central to the country’s overall economy, culture, and way of life.
He noted that increasing the sustainability of the seas is essential to safeguarding the nation's future. The minister said that ensuring the health of the oceans is fundamental for the Maldives to thrive.
World Oceans Day is marked on June 8 every year. The theme for this year is “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us.”
With 99 percent of the country’s territory made up of ocean, the seas are the Maldives’ greatest hope for a prosperous and resilient economy — a sentiment also reiterated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in his official message to mark the occasion.
