The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Gaza’s Al-Amal Hospital “virtually out of service” due to ongoing military operations and severe shortages of medical supplies.

“Access to the hospital is obstructed, preventing new patients from reaching care,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Monday, adding that this is leading to preventable deaths.

Two emergency medical teams—one local and one international—are still working under extreme conditions to care for remaining patients with limited resources.

With Al-Amal’s closure, the Nasser Medical Complex is now the only hospital in Khan Younis equipped with an intensive care unit.

Despite limited recent aid deliveries, the WHO says the health system remains crippled after months of blockade. The Gaza war, now in its 20th month following the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel, has caused a devastating humanitarian crisis marked by hunger, mass displacement, and infrastructure collapse.
