At a spirited rally held on June 23 to welcome back former President Mohamed Nasheed and members of the Democrats to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Party President Abdullah Shahid launched a scathing attack on President Mohammed Muizzu’s administration, labeling it a “humongous scam government” that has deceived the Maldivian people.
Addressing an energized crowd, Shahid accused the government of orchestrating multiple scams under various guises, including banking and dollar scams, the Rasmalé glass tunnel project, the Chagos scheme, and the “India Out” campaign. He also criticized the government for misleading promises on housing, flats, and youth opportunities, as well as exploiting its own party members. “This government is out to deceive everyone,” Shahid declared, highlighting the lack of basic healthcare provisions, such as medicines through Aasandha.
Shahid further condemned the Muizzu administration for halting development projects initiated by the previous MDP government across the country, leaving private companies and citizens unpaid for their contributions. “Every project started on every island has been stopped,” he said, questioning the government’s claim of repaying a 5 billion rufiyaa loan while allegedly holding a 1.3 billion rufiyaa surplus. “Give the money to the people of Maldives and the private companies. That’s how you’ll have the rest. Otherwise, you are a scam government,” Shahid asserted.
Calling for unity, Shahid urged MDP supporters to set aside all distractions and focus on securing a decisive victory in the upcoming local council elections. “We must win these elections to restore trust and progress for our people,” he emphasized, rallying the crowd to channel their energy into grassroots campaigning.
The rally, which also celebrated Nasheed’s return to the MDP fold, underscored the party’s renewed vigor and determination to challenge the current administration. With Shahid’s fiery critique and a clear call to action, the MDP is positioning itself as a formidable force to champion the interests of Maldivians in the upcoming elections.
