US President Donald Trump lashed out at Elon Musk on Tuesday over government subsidies, amid a heated dispute surrounding Trump’s $4.5 trillion “One Big Beautiful Bill.”
“Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history,” Trump posted on social media. “Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa.”
The remarks follow Musk’s sharp criticism of the spending bill, which he claims promotes “debt slavery.” Musk, who recently stepped down from leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has vowed to form a new political party and has accused Republicans of abandoning fiscal responsibility.
As voting on the bill began Monday, Trump suggested DOGE investigate Musk’s companies, saying, “No more rocket launches, satellites, or electric car production — our country would save a fortune!”
The proposed bill, which seeks to extend Trump’s first-term tax cuts and boost border security, has divided Republicans. Critics warn it could add over \$3 trillion to the national debt and strip healthcare from millions of low-income Americans.
Musk reiterated his stance on Tuesday: “All I’m asking is that we don’t bankrupt America. What’s the point of a debt ceiling if we keep raising it?”
