President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the Second Amendment to the Water and Sewerage Act (Act No: 8/2020). The bill, passed during the 23rd sitting of Parliament’s second session on 11 August 2025, has now been published in the Government Gazette and come into force.

The Amendment requires the Government and relevant state authorities to ensure that all inhabited islands have adequate access to water by 2027. It also mandates technical and advisory support for local councils, introduces licensing criteria for professionals in the sector, and provides for the establishment of water testing laboratories.

In addition, the law prescribes penalties for the misuse of water and sewerage systems. The rules and regulations under the Amendment must be formulated and published within three months.
