President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has extended greetings to the Maldivian people on the occasion of National Day, reaffirming his belief that citizens will continue to uphold the values of independence and nationhood.

In a message shared on his official X account, the President paid tribute to al-Sultan al-Ghaazee Muhammad Thakurufaanu al-A’uzam, whose struggle 466 years ago secured the Maldives’ sovereignty. He noted that Boduthakurufaanu’s legacy remains a source of inspiration and national pride.

The President urged Maldivians to draw strength from the patriots who sacrificed their lives for the nation, highlighting the spirit of unity and resilience that defines Maldivian identity.

This year’s official celebrations are being held in Utheemu, the birthplace of Sultan Thakurufaanu. President Muizzu and the First Lady departed for Utheemu after attending the flag-hoisting ceremony at Republic Square this morning.

National Day is marked annually on the first day of Rabi' al-Awwal to commemorate the liberation of the Maldives from Portuguese rule.
