China on Tuesday expressed shock and condemnation over an Israeli strike on a Gaza hospital that killed at least 20 people, including five journalists.

Foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said China was deeply concerned by the deaths of medical personnel and journalists in the conflict. “We express our condolences to the victims and our sympathies to their families,” he added.

Reuters, the Associated Press, and Al Jazeera confirmed the loss of their contributors in the attack, while the Israeli military said it would investigate the incident.

Media watchdogs report that nearly 200 journalists have been killed during Israel’s nearly two-year assault on Gaza, making it one of the deadliest conflicts for media workers.

Guo urged Israel to halt military operations in Gaza, allow humanitarian supplies to enter, and work toward a comprehensive ceasefire to prevent a worsening humanitarian crisis.
