The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has endorsed the Maldives’ application to join the Agency as a member, marking a significant step towards full membership.
The decision was taken unanimously during the IAEA’s 69th General Conference, held from 15 to 19 September in Vienna. The Maldives delegation is led by Dr. Salma Rasheed, Permanent Representative to the UN Offices in Geneva.
Addressing the Conference, Ambassador Dr. Salma Rasheed highlighted the shared challenges of Small Island Developing States, including climate change and fragile ecosystems, stressing the importance of science-driven international cooperation. She noted that IAEA membership will help the Maldives access technical support in health, food security, and capacity-building, while contributing to global peace and sustainable development.
The Maldives first applied for membership in November 2024, with priorities including expanding advanced cancer care through nuclear medicine and leveraging technology for sustainable growth.
Established in 1957, the IAEA promotes the safe and peaceful use of nuclear science and technology to support development, security, and international cooperation.
