President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged that 12 hectares of land will be reclaimed in Vaavu Atoll, Fulidhoo, alongside the island’s harbour development project.
During his visit to Fulidhoo on Friday, part of his ongoing tour of four atolls, the President stressed that the reclamation project can only proceed with full community backing. He said the Island Council must formally confirm residents’ support before work begins, citing a recent case where a similar project was halted after public opposition.
Acknowledging Fulidhoo’s growing role in local tourism, President Muizzu said reclamation would be carried out without compromising the island’s natural beauty. He confirmed that practical work is scheduled to start next year once the community’s stance is communicated.
The President also announced that a US dollar ATM will be installed before March 2026 and inaugurated the Fulidhoo Health Centre Extension Project, which will expand into a 20-bed facility.
Additionally, he presided over the signing of an agreement between the Sports Ministry and Proxy Group Pvt Ltd to build a volleyball court and pledged that work on a futsal ground will begin later this year. Development works at Fulidhoo Harbour and Bank of Maldives ATM services were also officially launched during the visit.
