South Hulhumalé MP Dr. Ahmed Shamheed has accused the government of trying to intimidate the public after failing to deliver on its promises.

Speaking at a press conference held by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentary group, Dr. Shamheed said the arrests made during the October 3 protest were a clear attempt to instill fear among citizens. He noted that the arrest of former MP Yasir and others occurred openly and was witnessed by the entire public.

He said those arrested had not used force, sticks, or weapons, and yet were detained for 15 days — an indication, he said, that the government had completely shifted its course.

Dr. Shamheed also warned of the possibility of another state of emergency if the current situation continues. He said that if the government continues its pattern of political intimidation and arrests, the country risks being set back by decades.

He urged the government to act responsibly, be transparent with the public, and fulfill its pledges, saying doing so would restore public trust and respect.
