Ahmed Shareef, Chairman of Cyryx College, has condemned the government’s decision to hand over the area from Hithadhoo Port to Hankede to the Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) for a coastal tourism project, warning that it could set back tourism development in Addu City.

The Hithadhoo Tourism Zone spans 40 hectares and includes a 2.4-kilometre beach area reclaimed during a previous MDP administration’s land reclamation project. The land, which was under the city council, has now been transferred for coastal tourism development.

In a post on X, Shareef, who is from Addu City, said residents are concerned about the transfer and that such a move could negatively impact local tourism growth. He said a petition will be submitted to the President and Parliament, urging the government to return the land to the city council.

The coastal tourism project was among the presidential pledges made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to Addu City. During his recent visit, President Muizzu said 6,000 tourist beds will be developed under the Coastal Tourism Project.
