As per the statistics, this would be the most tourist arrivals recorded in a single month this year, and as well as since the border reopening of the Maldives.

The Maldives reopened its borders on July 15, 2020, after closing the borders for three long months due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As per the statistics of the Ministry of Tourism, so far this year Maldives has seen over 288,000 tourist arrivals. As per the Tourism Ministry records, 92,103 tourists arrived in January, 96,882 tourists arrived in February, while in March, over 100,000 tourists arrived in the Maldives.

The Tourism Ministry has also stated India, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, and Kazakhstan as the top source markets for tourist arrival. The records also show that currently, a total of 1,017 tourist facilities are in operation. This includes 159 Resorts/ Marinas, 687 guesthouses, 158 Safari vessels, and 13 hotels.

Along with reported coronavirus cases, Maldives announced a state of public health emergency on March 12 last year, the first such declaration under a recent public health protection law. Following this, the Maldives closed its borders on March 27, 2020.

Since the border reopening, the Maldives has seen an increase in tourist arrivals from day-to-day. The Maldives aims to be a safe haven to the tourists amidst the pandemic with precautionary measures taken in every tourist establishment and an initiative in progress to vaccinate tourism industry workers.
