President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has extended felicitations and well wishes to all Maldivian citizens on the occasion of Eid-Al-Fitr, in a televised address earlier tonight.
In his address, President Solih underlined the significance of the occasion in the hearts of Maldivians, in terms of religion, culture, and society as a whole. He urged the public to exchange greetings and to get in touch with family and friends to celebrate the holy day.
Continuing his address, the President shed light on two factors casting shadows on the joy of the occasion, the first being the May 6th terror attack on the Speaker of the Parliament, President Mohamed Nasheed. He stated that the terror attack on President Nasheed had instilled fear and unease in the hearts of the people, condemning the attackers as inhumane. He asserted that any attempt to take a human life will not be tolerated under any circumstance and that the perpetrators will be brought to justice following thorough investigations.
President Solih also elaborated on the second factor - the country's current situation with regards to the Covid-19 pandemic. With the recent surge of positive cases in the country, he noted that our nation is now obligated to take more stringent measures. The President urged everyone to work together to subdue the spread of the illness. He said that working together is crucial in order to reduce the stress on our healthcare system and prevent the situation from spiraling out of control.
Speaking further, President Solih conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to all health workers, volunteers, and members of the armed forces for their selfless service to the nation during this pandemic. He also noted that today is International Nurses Day, sending his greeting on the occasion to all nurses in the country and expressing his gratitude for their contributions to society.
