The Maldives has confirmed that the country has no case of Mucormycosis infection, which is also known as the Black Fungus.

Last week one patient was tested in suspicion for having a black fungus infection from the country. The Spokesperson of the President's Office, Mabrook has confirmed that the test result showed that it was not a case of black fungus.

"There was one patient suspected for having a black fungus infection. Further testing shows that this is not the case. It was not a case of black fungus," said Mabrook.

As per HPA, the test result showed that the patient is having a common fungal infection seen in some elderly patients or bedridden patients, and not mucormycosis.

Mucormycosis is caused by exposure to mucor mold, which is commonly found in soil, air, and even in the nose and mucus of humans. It spreads through the respiratory tract and erodes facial structures. Sometimes, doctors have to surgically remove the eye to stop the infection from reaching the brain.

Meanwhile, the neighboring country, India, has reported multiple cases of mucormycosis.
