Parliament Member Ahmed Usham raises concerns over how the recently established Maldives-India cargo ferry service link between India and Maldives changed from a passenger-cargo ferry to an only cargo ferry.

Member Usham tweeted congratulating the cargo ship reaching H.Dh Kulhudhuffushi port. In his tweet, he hoped that the Maldives-India cargo ferry service link would bring more developments to the Northern Maldives.

He further addressed that from initial discussion till confirmation through agreements, this service was announced as a passenger-cargo ferry but along with the establishment of the service it has become clear that this will be only cargo ferries. Hence he called the government to make it clear on what has happened with the change.

The signed agreement to start the Maldives-India cargo ferry service link between India and Maldives was approved by the Indian government in July. The agreement stated the establishment of passenger and cargo ferry service between Cochin, India and Kulhudhuhfushi, Maldives.

This has raised a lot of concerns by the opposition. Some have said that this would be an open door to bring in workers without a permit, and increase influence of the foreign businesses to the Maldivian economy. Some have also said the government's approach in marketing the advantages of being able to sell local goods into the international market through this cargo ferry service is a false speech given to the public.
