UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday confirmed that at least one person infected with omicron had died. He also said that the new variant was also resulting in hospital admissions and the "best thing" people could do was get their booster jab.
“Omicron is producing hospitalizations and sadly at least one patient has been confirmed to have died with omicron,” said the prime minister during a visit to a vaccination clinic in west London.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has also warned of a “tidal wave” of omicron infections and announced that the country would be speeding up its booster program to offer all adults a third dose of a vaccine by the end of the year.
The government also unveiled "Plan B" last week with people required to wear masks in public transport. The prime minister has repeatedly declined to rule out further restrictions ahead of Christmas, but that all options were being kept under review.
1,576 Omicron cases were reported across the UK on Monday, taking the total number to 4,713, the UK Health Security Agency said.
