India reported 411 fresh Omicron cases on Wednesday - the highest single-day tally so far- even as the health ministry confirmed the country's first death from the variant.
The death of an elderly person with comorbidities, including diabetes, had been reported from Rajasthan and that this was “technically” an Omicron-related death, the ministry's Joint Secretary Lav Aggarwal said.
“When he was detected as Omicron-positive, his treatment, including those for existing comorbidities, was going on as per protocol,” Agarwal added.
Amid this development, the country has reported a 6.3 times increase in the number of new Covid-19 cases in the last eight days. The Health Ministry stated that the spread was a matter of concern. The case positivity had risen from 0.79 % on December 29 to 5.03% on January 5, it noted.
The highly infectious variant Omicron has spread to 26 states and UTs across India.
