The Criminal Court of the Maldives has sentenced State Minister for Youth, Assad Ali (Adubarey), to 15 days in jail, in connection to Ali Waheed’s case.

Assad Ali was sentenced to jail as the guarantor for the return of former Tourism Minister Ali Waheed.

Ali Waheed was dismissed as Tourism Minister after allegations that he sexually assaulted and harassed multiple female employees at the Tourism Ministry. Seven charges have been pressed against him including, inflicting a sexual injury, attempted rape, indecent exposure, attempt to cause sexual assault, and two counts of unlawful sexual contact.

Following the allegations against Ali Waheed, he was issued a travel ban by the criminal court. But it was later lifted after hearing testimony from a doctor to confirm Ali Waheed needs to travel overseas for medical treatment, and as he had also submitted a guarantor for his return.

The last hearing in connection to the case was held on last year, November 28, where Judge issued an order to arrest Ali Waheed and bring him to the hearings under police custody. The court also warned Assad Ali, who signed as a guarantor deal, that he will be penalized if failed for Ali Waheed’s appearance at court.

But with no efforts observed from Assad Ali to bring Ali Waheed back to the country, the Criminal Court decided to penalize Assad Ali. Assad Ali, who was sentenced today, also failed to appear at the hearing of the case.

Following the jail sentence, Assad Ali has been dismissed from his position as the State Minister for Youth, Sports, and Community Empowerment
