Maldives Health Protection Agency (HPA), approves the Rapid Covid Antigen test kits and publishes the guideline of its usage.
As per the HPA, the Rapid Covid Antigen test kits will be used in Health Ministry approved health facilities only. HPA also has stated that the test kits have to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration or it should be mentioned in the WHO Emergency use list.
As per the guideline, the Antigen test kits will be used to test symptomatic patients after 7 days of showing symptoms of Covid-19 and if the Antigen test gets negative, a PCR test will be followed.
The Rapid Covid Antigen test kits are more accurate at the initial stages of contacting the virus.
Guideline also states that the Antigen test will not be used in islands without a community spread or in islands where a community spread is not expected and if the Antigen test is needed to be used in islands with a Health Ministry approved facility, no further permit will be needed to continue.
The test kit is a highly portable, and affordable tool for detecting active Covid-19 infections and it is manufactured from the US company Abbott. The US company Abbott is amongst the top laboratory test equipment producers in the world.
This test kit, which is an EU approved test, is currently being used in US and European countries. Abbott plans to ship millions of test kits around the globe.
Medtech is currently the only authorized distributor of Abbott in the Maldives.
