Parliament member for the North-Hithadhoo constituency, Mohamed Aslam, has won Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) Parliamentary Group Leader election.

MDP’s Parliamentary Group election was held today afternoon.

MP Aslam won the election by competing against the current Parliamentary Group Leader MP Ali Azim. Aslam secured 40 votes against Ali Azim, who received 25 votes.

In addition to the Parliamentary Group leader, the election for Deputy Leaders, Secretary-General, Deputy Secretary-General, and Chief Whip were also held.

From the two Deputy Parliamentary Group Leaders election, MP Mohamed Rasheed secured the post with 49 votes, but the other two candidates who contested for the post; MP Hussain Shaheem, and MP Ilyas Labeeb were tied with 34 votes each. Hence an additional round of voting will be placed to elect a second Deputy Parliamentary Group Leader.

Furthermore, MP Hussain Mohamed Didi won the post of Parliamentary Group Secretary-General, while MP Mohamed Nihad won the Parliamentary Group Deputy Secretary-General post.

Parliamentary Group Chief Whip post was secured by MP Abdul Mughnee. The posts of Parliamentary Group’s Whips were all secured by the five candidates who contested for the post.
