The very first Abaarana (Gold) Tier of the world’s first destination loyalty program, the Maldives Border Miles, has been awarded to one of the pioneers of tourism in the Maldives, George Corbin, and his daughter Georgia Corbin, the first child tourist to the Maldives.

The prestigious Abaarana Tier, the most privileged offer, was presented to them by the Minister of Health, Ahmed Naseem, during an exclusive event held at the VIP Lounge of the Velana International Airport before Corbin and his daughter concluded their visit to the Maldives.

Minister Naseem and Mr. Corbin initially met at the Maldives Embassy in Sri Lanka in 1971 and they later worked together to introduce tourism in the Maldives. George Corbin was an Italy-based diving tour operator then and has greatly contributed to the tourism industry ever since.

As one of the key pioneers of Maldivian tourism, George Corbin and his daughter arrived in the Maldives on February 15, to participate in the golden jubilee celebratory activities of Maldivian tourism, marking the 50th anniversary since its inception.

On February 16, 1972, Mr. Corbin became the first tourist who arrived in the Maldives. He also brought the first group of tourists to the Maldives, mainly journalists and divers.
