The Speaker of the Parliament, Mr. Nasheed announces that the state has been advised not to release islands for agriculture purposes.

Speaking at the parliament, Mr. Nasheed says that it has been over 32 years of releasing the island for Agriculture purposes, meanwhile he describes that these islands do not make a profit through agriculture business.

He further highlighted that the islands released for resort development bring more benefits, and agriculture businesses run in the inhabited island is seen more beneficial than the agriculture businesses run in uninhabited islands released.

Meanwhile, the Fisheries Ministry recently announced a bid opening for 6 uninhabited islands for agricultural businesses. These islands include; H.A Madulaa island, Sh. Kakaa Eriyadu island, Sh. Neyo island, N. Tholhendhoo island, B. Maaddoo island, and G.dh. Oin’gilla island.

Although Speaker of the Parliament, Mr. Nasheed announces the advice given to the state, not to release islands for agriculture purposes, under the state's policy it has been planned to broaden the agricultural businesses and promote it across the Maldives to address the economic challenges faced from the Covid-19 pandemic.
